Those areas come under Ipswich rather than Brisbane....a bit ordinary & disfunctional !

those are actually suburbs of Ipswich which is a different city entirely- having lived in both I have to say Ipswich has the better council and facilities, even despite the social stigma due to the high level of unemployment.

As suburbs go avoid Gailes and Riverview- there is a bit of a drug and crime problem. Dinmore is a fairly industrial area so that leaves a bit to be desired. Collingwood Park is the most desirable of the ones you mention but there are limited facilities in the suburb-the neighbouring suburb of Redbank is just as nice, is cheaper and has better facilities. Bundamba has nicer houses than Collingwood Park unless you are after a modern house- it is an older suburb and houses are mostly Queenslanders. Good facilities in Bundamba, it is the only one you've listed where you can where everything is just a short walk away.

Suburbs to avoid in Ipswich are- Goodna, Gailes, Leichart and One Mile. Dinmore is borderline.

Good suburbs are Silkstone, Booval, Collinwood Park, Springfield (even though they try to pretend they're not part of Ipswich!) and Redbank.

All the others are moderately good but not what I'd call desireable.

I don't actually live in any of these suburbs- I'm in one of the little towns outside of Ipswich that falls under it's jurisdiction.

Some parts of Collingwood Park are OK but the rest are to be avoided. When people talk about Brisbane's western suburbs, they mean the many upmarket suburbs to the north of the river. The ones you've mentioned are in the south-west and are all actually part of Ipswich and not in Brisbane at all.

West Brisbane is OK. St Lucia is probably the best suburb in West Brisbane. Out of those, Collingwood Park is pretty good.

geez it irks me how these places ever got lumped into Brisbane's wonderful "western suburbs" tag. the Western suburbs used to describe the lovely family suburbs, low crime, high owner occupied, ppl who cared about schools and community values. Now we've got all these other crappy suburbs lumped in with us, and frankly they are mostly south rather than west!

And St Lucia is NOT the best of the western suburbs by the way. What on earth is great about living in overpriced housing that's nestled amongst uni students gone wild???? I'm sure there will be plenty of Indro/Fig Tree Pkt/Chapel Hill folk who agree.

but we digress....

depending on what kind of person you are you might want to avoid those areas?

or not??

better to live in a crappy house in a great suburb I say. The community is a better experience.

I went to a private school and lived in Clayfield growing up , I can genuinely say that Gailes is no better or worse then any other suburb.

I own a house in Gailes and have never had any problems .

Most of my neighbours are elderly people who have lived in the street for years.

These places are in Ipswich not Brisbane. Houses are cheap to buy and rent here as most if them have partly fallen into old coal mines that have collapsed. Good luck!
